At the end of summer, before Autumn begins properly, there is a time when lots of gathering takes place. There is the gathering in of the harvest from the arable fields, market gardens, allotments, vegetable patches and hedgerows. Then there is the sight of swallows and starlings gathering in flocks, ready to make the long journey to their winter quarters. Blackbirds, wasps and field mice feast on fruits and berries, squirrels start to hoard nuts and the nights start to feel cooler. This painting, with its warm, rich, earthy colours, portrays that collective sense of gathering in and getting ready for the coming winter.
